Dragonflies have the
ability to fly in every direction. They have two sets of wings which allow
them to hover, fly backwards, turn around quickly in mid-air and land in an
instant. Dragonflies are unmatched for speed and agility in
the air. Dragonflies have large eyes enabling them to see
in every direction.
Highly
adaptable, dragonflies are among the most ancient
group of insects: predating dinosaurs, dragonflies have survived on this planet
for over 300 million years.
Contrary to popular
belief, dragonflies do not have stingers. They belong to the insect order odonata. Derived from Greek, odon means ‘tooth’ which refers to their
toothed jaw. Fortunately, it is only used on such prey as mosquitoes and other
pest insects. Dragonflies apply multiple senses including sight, touch and
vibration to detect prey and engage with their environment.
